Speech & Language Therapy

Speech language therapy is a treatment for all communication disorders. The therapists are specialized (Speech Language Pathology) in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders, cognitive communication disorders, voice disorders, fluency disorders and swallowing disorders in children and adults.


WHEN DO YOU NEED TO CONSULT AN SLP?

Your child should say first word b age 1 and they should now about 20 words by18 months. If your child is behind these targets, get a consultation with slp. Slp can help your child develop their speech and language skills, he child may have difficulty with speech but not language, language but no speech or both,

SPEECH

Speech involves articulation, fluency and voice. All these aspects of speech must come together for effective verbal skills

ARTICULATION

Articulation deals with the production of certain sounds. If your child have problem with any sound production, then the child need articulation therapy eg;trouble to produce ‘r’ sound.

VOICE

The sound produced in the persons larynx and uttered through mouth. A person need much voice volume and quality. If any deviation to voice occurs, you can consult an SLP and start voice therapy

FLUENCY

Fluency is the rhythm of speech. If you or your child has any disfluency in speech such as, blocks, repetitions, prolongations or increased rate of speech, you need to attend fluency therapy

LANGUAGE

Language refers to words we use to share or express our ideas.it include understanding, speaking, reading and writing
Every child develops speech and language skills at their own pace. Milestones for development are wide.
Language therapy should be started:

  • If your child uses less than 20 words at 18 months and less than 50 words by age 2.
  • If your child uses only few sounds to produce words
  • By age of 2,if your child has trouble understanding simple sentence such as ‘come here’
  • Our child talks infrequently and has trouble using language socially
  • Unclear or immature speech
SWALLOWING

Swallowing is the process of eating and drinking food by active and passive participation of upper aero digestive organs .if ou or your child have problems during feeding such as;aspiration,penetration or pain while eating ,then you can ask the help of SLP
